Question: I am about to buy pro photog dslr body?

Answer: Nikon behind Canon? Hardly. Both companies make some of the most advanced, most powerful digital SLR cameras that the world has ever seen. You can’t go wrong with either brand. If a sales person tells you one is better than the other it means 1) they have more of that brand on the shelf this month and want to sell it or 2) that brand is paying higher sales commissions this month.

If this is your first D-SLR camera (and it sounds like it is) the Nikon D700 or equivient Canon 5D II is too much. Digital cameras are obsolete in 2 years. You shouldn’t spend that much money on a new camera when you don’t yet have an inventory of good lenses. While cameras get replaced by new models every year, good lenses will last you for decades.

Consider the Nikon D90 or Canon 50D. Both are extraordinary cameras with capabilities that will last a photographer for years. Use the money you save to buy good lenses. When the time comes to replace your camera, you’ll be happy you have good glass on your shelf to use with the new camera and didn’t spend your entire budget on just a camera body that eventually went obsolete.

in view of my first DSLR purchase the up to the D5000 and the 500d, how important is the internal body autofocus motor?

Answer: a shorter answer than the above: lenses without autofocus motor depends from the internal motor of the camera. If your camera does not have them, you have to focus manually. These lenses are much cheaper than that with the engine, but they are a few. Lenses the engine itself can be used at any point, and it works fine, there are a variety of new lenses to choose from, but the disadvantage is they are heavier, bulkier and thus more expensive. anyways, newer lenses coming all the time, and 99% percent of them have the engine, so do not worry about, you need to make only worry if you have a number of lenses lying around from the 1970s that lack the internal motor. and another thing: the auto focus lenses with motor can be a lot faster than the concentration that without them.
