Question: What would you call (or how would you define or explain) this type of film lighting?

I’m trying to figure out, or explain, a type of lighting I wish to achieve when I start making my student films in about a year. At first I called it “Neo Noir” but that doesn’t really fit. It’s more like low-key, night-time scenes with harsh contrasts and deep color (but not cartoony like in the Dick Tracy movie). Those are from American Graffiti. I couldn’t find images from “Chungking Express.” In particular the scene I was thinking is when the pinapple-eating cop is sitting outside a Circle K (or any scene inside the Circle K in that movie). I don’t know… sorry.

Answer: I think the effect is more created by use of colors than of lighting.

If you change the lighting – angles, grouping, etc – the effect will remain, though changing the colors will shift the whole mood.

Question: What is put into a horror film?

I'm interested to see what it takes to make a horror movie. Lighting, sound, editing? ect.

Answer: The interior lighting should be either very bright or very, very dark. You must either be blinded by the Silent Hill-esque pallor of any or all ignore what is lurking in the dark. Sound must be as lighting, very quiet or very loud. In scenes of suspense, it is good for there to be an almost complete silence. If you make a horror movie recalls the film classic, and you're not on a tiny budget, you may want to put together an original score. It may take considerable time and money but a score is more disturbing than almost anything scary! editing must be fast. If you try to do something exciting, you must keep your audience. Lots Quick semi-rapid shots should do the trick. Finally, I know you do not ask about this, but you need good actors. If players are not good, the film does not seem real, and the public is not alarmed. Hope this helps!
