Answer: If you want to buy an SLR camera then go for it. I respectfully disagree with a previous answer saying you are not ready, as to buy another camera and then later move up to an SLR is clearly a waste of money. Many SLRs these days have auto modes where you really don’t need to know much about the camera to use it.

Where your question goes wrong is asking about the lens features. All SLR cameras that spring to my mind have removable lenses. So firstly think about the body. For the body you need to consider Megapixels and any other features that are important to you such as write speed (to the storage card) continuous shooting speed, modes of operation, menu system etc etc.

Then you need to think about lenses. If you are a normal user then yes you might like to think about a super zoom lens although they are specified a little differently, instead of the number of times zoom they instead will talk about the start point and the finish point. Here is an example. Nikon make an 18-200mm lens (other manufacturers do too) to compare this lens in terms that you are used to, divide the smaller number into the larger number and you will see this is a massive 11.1 x zoom.

It’s difficult to make a lens that does this extreme range very well and remember that with an SLR you are buying a higher quality camera so this will start to matter. To solve your problem, the lenses are interchangeable of course, so you end up with a number of lenses. Often times Nikon SLRs will come with a “kit” lens of say 18-55mm (3 x zoom) or 18-135mm (7.5 x zoom). You can then add to this system with a telephoto lens of say 70-300mm.

If you ended up with three lenses say a 12-24mm, 18-135mm and 70-300mm, your total lens SYSTEM would give you a massive 25x zoom by interchanging lenses. Each lens being well suited to its own job.

So start off simple and let the system grow with you. Instead of buying a ‘bridge’ camera and then later an SLR, buy the SLR and a kit lens now, and save money later on for better lenses when you have a better idea of what you want to achieve.

I own Nikon Cameras so I can talk a little about them. In 10 MP you have a large choice. In American terms the D40X starts around $600 (some lenses won’t work) the D80 around $1000 and the D200 around $1800 (no automatic modes). These are reference prices, scout around to do a little better.

You could even start with the D40X and if it’s justified later buy a D200 and all the lenses will work thus reducing the cost of upgrade.

Think about all I have said and see what’s right for you. I am not suggesting other brands are rubbish, all I suggest is that you take your time and even go to a good camera store and hold each camera in your hands. Run through the menus and controls and see if everything falls into place for you.

Question: Difference between "macro zoom" and "telephoto zoom lens?

I just bought my first digital SLR, a Canon EOS Rebel XSI. So far, it seems incredible, but now I'm looking to broaden the selection of the lens. It came with a standard zoom lens (EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS) but I would like a better zoom. I've been looking online and the consumer reports and find a goal that seems a very reasonable price (Tamron AF 55-200mm F4-5.6 Di II LD Macro). Consumer Reports had listed in the "tele zoom" category, but manufacturer's website, which appears as "macro zoom" of the lens. So what's the difference? (PS recommendations for other modestly priced zoom is appreciated too.)

Answer: Simply put, refers to a macro lens ability to focus on a very narrow range. A telephoto zoom lens is the optimum approach shot distance, while the lenses designed for macro are usually at their sharpest at macro focus distances and are not as acute in other focus distances. go with the Tamron 18-200mm macro which is equipped for most of constant diverseness without changing lens. It is good that most modern lenses macro can be equipped at affordable prices. When I started, I used to have the use of tubes extension. Xx
