Question: D80 and SB 28….need recomendation?

Hi,

I asked before about triggering two SB28s using D80 in-camera function. I proceeded to get the flashes, but found out they do not support wireless slave mode (unlike SB26). I want to use the SB28s as slaves (for fill and background light) in 3 lights setting along with one SB600 (as main light). What are the choices I can choose from? I’d prefer wireless option, but if the cost and function of wired options are better, I’d consider that as well.

Thank you,
T.

Answer: I just bought a Sony W90 and like it. Try Sam’s Club. They were cheaper than Circuit City and the local camera shop by $20 on the exact same camera.

Question: Nikon SB 28 questions?

Will the Nikon SB 28 do wireless slave flash?

Answer: alone. You can use Pocket Wizards with it even if one or SU-4 unit will work with some caveats (you need an owner who does not preflash mainly).

Question: What sort of studio lighting do I need?

I need some to invest in some portable studio equipment. I think I’m gonna go for this light tent:

http://www.stevesphotoshop.co.uk/light_tent_studio_cube_200cm_extra_large.html

because it’s convenient and would work well for what I want to do aside from run of the mill formal shots. I have no idea about lighting though and would like to keep it as cheep and basic as possible for now.

Would something like this be sufficient?

I don’t really know much about flash/continuous lighting either but I think for me continuous would be a lot easier.

Any help appreciated!

So light tents aren’t so good for general people shots? Would something like the two lights I linked to just with a normal backdrop work better?

Answer: The light tent is basically for product shots where even, shadowless lighting is required. The lighttent material acts as a diffuser with the lights situated outside. (I use a smaller version)

For “people” shots, you are best with a three light setup as the basic.
This then gives you more control and you can adjust to have more/less shadow, you can highlight the hair (to separate from the background) etc.

You should add a softbox/snoot and a couple of umbrellas to your basic kit and then buy a couple of books on basic portraiture lighting setups.

Once you have more idea of how the positioning of lights affects the shot then you can start practicing more with reflectors, dark boards etc.

If you can get hold of a shop mannequin then they are good for practising on.
